Man Swallowed Shell Casings and Bullet to Hide Evidence

A man charged in connection with the shooting death of a Clayton resident allegedly swallowed shell casings and even a live round to hide evidence, prosecutor’s alleged this week.

Back-to-back detention hearings were held Wednesday for Glassboro residents Victor A. Kaganzev, 20, and Christopher D. Velez, 21, who were arrested in the killing of David Cardonick. Superior Court Judge Mary Beth Kramer ordered that both men remain jailed pending trial.

The situation began with an “internet beef” between the victim’s son and another man, said Gloucester County Assistant Prosecutor Jonathan Grekstas. The nature of the dispute was not disclosed.

Kaganzev allegedly hatched a plan to “secure money” from Cardonick’s son. Prosecutors say Kaganzev gave Velez a silver, .22 caliber revolver and told him to get the cash and shoot anyone who resisted. The pair traveled to the Cardonick residence on Sept. 28. Velez walked up to the apartment door and knocked. When the victim answered, Velez stuck the gun through the opening. Cardonick tried to close the door, but Velez forced it open and fired twice, hitting the victim once in the forehead, Grekstas said.

Cardonick, 48, was hospitalized and died days later.

Video surveillance shows Velez calmly walking to the apartment and back to the car after the shooting, Grekstas said. He returned the gun to Kaganzev who allegedly took extreme measures to hide evidence. “Specifically, he chewed and swallowed two of the shell casings and then swallowed one live round, all three of which had to be surgically recovered,” Grekstas said.
