A pit bull bit the head of a 3-week-old Michigan girl, fatally injuring the infant just minutes after an adult checked on her. An autopsy confirmed the bite killed Susannah Jean Murray. An adult found her bleeding with a severe head injury at her home in Grand Rapids on Thursday evening. Nearby, one of the family’s three pit bulls was found with blood around its mouth. Adults in the house said they checked on the infant just five minutes earlier.
All three dogs were taken to a local animal shelter where they will be held under quarantine. “The breed of a pit bull, by itself, is not enough to condemn it, any dog can bite,” said GRPD spokesman Sgt. Terry Dixon. “This serves as a critical reminder to never leave a child unattended around a dog.” No arrests have been made, the incident remains under investigation by both GRPD and Child Protective Services.
