A cemetery with 5 MILLION bodies is running out space due to the war with ISIS. These astonishing images of the 10km2 Wadi al-Salam cemetery reveal the devastation Iraq has endured following decades of war.
Dubbed “Peace Valley”, the site has a special place in the hearts of Shi’ite Muslims as it surrounds the Mausoleum of their first imam, Ali Bin Abi Talib. Talib was a cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Mohammad, but since his burial the cemetery has become the world’s largest. Since the emergence of Islamic State, which overran a third of the country in 2014, 200 daily burials can typically take place. Before ISIS, no more than 80 would be carried out, Jihad Abu Saybi, a historian of the cemetery, said.
