Olympic track and field athletes might be able to make do without electricity, but chances are they’re going to need water. Unfortunately for those slated to compete this summer in Rio, they’ll have neither if someone doesn’t pay the bills. Both services to Joao Havelange stadium have been cut off due to unpaid bills totaling $225,000.
City officials aren’t blaming Olympic officials, however, but the stadium’s local soccer team Botafogo for the outage. City administrators say it’s the team that was to cover the bills after the stadium reopened after a two-year renovation last January, while Botafogo officials argue it was still the city that was supposed to pay.
