At the National Geographic’s annual photography competition there were more than 17,000 entries submitted, which were whittled down to three winners and seven recognised on merit.

Third place went to Camel Ardah, as it called in Oman – one of the traditional styles of camel racing.

The grand prize went to whale whisperers – diving with a humpback whale and her newborn calf while they cruise around Roca Partida island, in Revillagigedo, Mexico.
