A Hot Start to Wimbledon

Nearly 30,000 bottles of champagne are on ice, 12,000 boxes of strawberries sit ready to be eaten and 230,000 glasses of Pimm’s have been prepared. It can mean only one thing – Wimbledon is here. And with temperatures forecast to soar beyond 36C as the week goes on, organisers are hurriedly preparing emergency plans to treat fans and players on what could end up being the hottest day ever recorded in the tournament’s history.  A spokesman for the All England Club said of the emergency plans being drawn up for spectators: ‘St John’s Ambulance will provide extra staff if needed and we also have our own first aid facilities. ‘We’ll be advising visitors to drink plenty of water, wear a hat and apply sunscreen.’
